Time for Detox

March 15, 2018

(This post was originally published on November 9, 2016.)

I am not a news watcher. I made the decision years ago to not allow TV news into my home. I kept up with what was happening in the world via brief dives into news online.

But, this election season I found myself unable to pull myself out of the vortex of negative political news. Thanks to an iPhone update, a little menacing app appeared on my home screen. It looked harmless. Soft red in hue with a cartoonish newspaper icon.

It beckoned me like a street corner drug dealer, “Hey, just take a peek. Aren’t you curious?”

My addiction grew from the occasional “hit” when I had a few unscheduled moments into a daily habitual morning “fix” — and even taking (dare I say it?) my iPhone to the bathroom (admit it, you do it, too) because I was unable to put it down and step away.

But, today, as I honestly declare my powerlessness over easy-access news sources, I claim my Day 1 chip to be clean of compulsive reading of the news. In fact, I have deleted that drug dealing news app from my iPhone.

I don’t know how long it will take to fully detoxify my mind from continuous exposure from the political news’ fear and anger, but I do know I will be a better gatekeeper of my mind, heart and soul.

Years ago, I learned from a relationship expert that it takes 7 positive encounters to balance 1 negative experience. So, I intend to stack the scale in favor of the positive. For me, this includes simple practices like looking up to the sky and trees when I walk my dog. And, more disciplined practices like prayer, meditation and yoga.

What about you? What are the practices that tip the scale in favor of the positive for you? And, how will you detox from what has been an unprecedented and unrelenting negative political climate?

Wholeheartedly,

Kelley
